Gadsden Woman to Woman, Alpha UPKUDO Martial Arts and Fitness, and the Gadsden County Health Department are partnering in fitness to promote a healthy initiative in which we are calling Step Up, Gadsden…Be Smart, Be Healthy! We are going to kick off the event on Saturday May 15, 2010 at Gadsden’s Woman to Woman yearly event. This event will be located at Carter Parramore Academy located on 631 South Stewart Street in Quincy from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. At this event, there will be a health exposition, a volleyball tournament, and a ZUMBA demonstration. Members of the community will find fun and easy ways to step it up and feel good about themselves and also get the opportunity to visit tables of partnering agencies and gather great information.
The whole purpose of this event is to get individuals in Gadsden County of all ages to be more active so they can be healthier. At this we would like to sign-up individuals in the community to get involved in the 20,000 steps each week challenge, which would last up to 8 weeks. During this challenge, each person must be enrolled with either the Gadsden County Health Department, Gadsden Woman to Woman, or Alpha UPKUDO and will receive a pedometer once they enroll. Each week, individuals will report to the organization in which he or she signed up with about the amount of steps that were taken and will receive a colored wristband denoting that they have reached the goal for the week. Each week there will be a different colored wristband given out. At the end of the eight weeks one winner in each age group will be determined by whoever has walked the most steps. Monthly winners will also be acknowledged with special prizes.
The data collector for the steps for each organization will then report the data collected to Ronterrius Clark, who is the Health Educator for the Gadsden County Health Department. He will keep track of the amount of steps that are taken on a weekly basis. Then at the end of each month, the winner of the different age groups (under 12, 12-19, and 20+) will receive a prize for taking the most steps; which will be determined by data analysis. We may also consider a senior group since there are quite a few seniors in the county. For this Initiative, we are targeting churches, schools, community centers and businesses. Radio, television stations, newspapers, and other venues used to assist us in getting the word out. We want the community to know that healthy eating and being physically active can lower their chance of developing diabetes, high blood pressure, obesity, and even osteoporosis.
